Air Burning Torches from JPLampwork
For the B8 & B10 models
Torch Assembly & Setup:
- Make sure you have all the parts. You should have the torch, a base, and 2 screws.
- Remove the protective plastic from the base.
- Attach the torch to the base with the two screws. The curved edges of the base face down (away from the torch) to provide clearance underneath for the screw heads.
- Attach a hose (not supplied) from your air pump to the barbed fitting with the Blue air control knob. You may use a hose clamp, but it is not needed. You may use either a rubber or plastic hose, but keep in mind the possibility of burning or melting the hose if a piece of hot glass touches it. I use a 3/16" ID x 5/16" OD clear plastic hose from my local hardware store. If your local hardware store doesn't have any (my local Home Depot did not), try a tropical fish store, and ask for some air hose.
- Attach a 1/4" ID hose (not supplied) from your gas regulator to the barbed fitting with the Orange gas control knob. Use a hose material suitable for your fuel (such as a T Grade hose for Propane). A hose clamp is needed for safety.
Torch Operation:
- Make sure both the air and gas knobs on the torch are closed (turned off).
- For B8 torch (wide flame), rotate the bottom window to about 1/3 open. There is no bottom window adjustment on the B10 torch (focused flame).
- Turn on the air pump.
- Turn on your gas supply. The fuel pressure needed is VERY LOW! Your regulator will be set to between 1/4 and 1/2 PSI. Open the Orange gas control knob all the way and light the torch. Adjust the pressure AT THE REGULATOR until the height of the flame is about 8-10 inches. If you want a smaller flame, you can close down the Orange gas control knob after you light the torch.
- Now, adjust the Orange gas control knob to get the basic flame size wanted. Then, slowly open the Blue air control knob to get the size and shape flame wanted. For the B8 torch, if you have too much air, the flame will blow out. If you don't have enough air, you will get carbon on your glass (the glass will get black). For the B10 torch, too much air will not blow out the flame, but you still will burn or oxidize your glass.
Torch Shut Down:
- Close the Orange gas control knob, shutting off the gas supply. Leave the Blue air control knob open for 1-2 minutes, to help cool off the torch. Remember, this is just air, not oxygen. There is no fire hazard letting the air run.
- Close the Blue air control knob.
- Turn off your air pump.
