I know many, many good glass artists. I also know a number of very good artists. In my opinion, there are only a few truely outstanding glass artists, and Milon Townsend is one of them.
Milon also understands the 'business' of art, and can explain it in a clear and concise way. He has writing a number of books, and speaks publically, on glass, marketing, design, and excellence. He is a teacher, contributes regularly to a number of magazines, and continues to involve himself in the development of flameworking as a serious artform.
ARTCO is proud to carry Milon's series of entertaining, instructional, and often inspirational, videos.

This video demonstrates the ways to use different canes in a piece, as a goblet stem, paperweight figure, or a freestanding insect.
Townsend explains the difference between 'filigrana' and 'latticino', and how the term 'milli's' came to be used instead of 'murrine'. He shows examples of the work of masters in the field, and makes the concept of canework accessible to anyone working in glass, clearly demonstrating technique and method of doing so.
You will learn how to make: cane with simple external pattern; cane with internal twist; alternate colors in a pattern on the outside; simple star murrine cane; realistic eye cane for an amphibian; and how to bundle sections of cane together and draw that down into a complex cane.
Also included is a 16 page, full-color booklet of the same subject matter, so the artist can have a reference handy while at the torch.

'What is Man'
Aspects of Scale in Flameworked Sculpture
Copyright 2001
1 DVD Disk
44 minutes
$39.95
This video clearly shows many of the methods that glass artist Milon Townsend had developed to make the creation of large solid flameworked sculptures possible.
These include: bridges to keep extremities from moving; pre-heated glass pontils to facilitate the handling of the piece; soaking at a given temperature to allow continuous working of the piece; and use of any burner as a hand torch to melt and move glass on an object from one plane or one shape, to another.
"It is my hope that this video will help flameworkers think on a different scale, to be willing to try a larger piece than they might have thought possible."

Flameworking with Teamwork, Technology & Scale
Copyright 2001
1 DVD Disk
46 minutes
$39.95
For many years, Milon Townsend has been making his flameworked sculptures with a team, incorporating new technologies, and on a larger scale than usually found in the flameworking studio. This video has grown out of the preparation for his presentation at the Glass Art Society conference in June of 2001, in Corning, NY.
'Teamwork' illustrates how he collaborates with other glass artists to create one of the 'Tide Pool' series of paperweights.
'Technology' follows one of his 'Body Language' sculptures through from beginning to completion. It shows how the waterjet, diamond drinder, abrasive blasting and ultraviolet adhesive are all brought together to serve the idea represented in the artwork.
'Scale' is a brief glimpse into the setup and process involved in making a large solid flameworked piece.
