If you are blowing or casting glass, you are going to need a high temperature glove to protect yourself. Choosing the right high temperature glove can sometimes be a daunting problem. ARTCO has prepared a whitepaper called: "How to select the right High Temperature Glove" to explain how a high temperature glove works, and how to select the right glove for your needs. We have worked closely with the glove manufacturer to come up with a selection of gloves that we think should satisfy the requirements of most hot glass artists. If you have special requirements, please feel free to contact us.
These gloves have a thumb design that offers more flexibility (well, as much flexibility as a high temp glove can offer). It does mean, however, that these are not reversible, and are not as well suited to use with cover mitts.

Gloves (and mitts) wear out as much due to abrasion as they do to burning. These cover mitts extend the life of your gloves and mitts by absorbing the brunt of the abuse. These cover mitts are also reversible, so you can swap them left-for-right when they are worn, effectively doubling their life. In addition, you can put a higher temperature rating cover mitt over a lower temperature glove, and effectively raise the temperature rating of that glove.
These cover mitts can be used over all gloves and mitts, but work best over the reversible line of mitts.

These sleeves protect your arms from both heat and accidental burns. Made from two layers of knit Kevlar, these 18" sleeves are available in two styles:
One style does not have a thumb hole. You may wear this sleeve anywhere on your arm that you wish.
The other style has a reinforced thumb hole. By sliding your thumb through this hole, you prevent the sleeve from riding up your arm. This sleeve provides coverage to your palm and the back of your hand. Of course, you don't have to use the thumb hole, and can wear it where ever you wish.
These sleeves are sold individually.

There are two other gloves that are very useful in the hot glass studio: the aluminized-back glove, and the leather palm glove.
When you are reaching into a kiln, you want to reflect as much heat away as possible. That is what the aluminized-backed gloves do. However, please do not touch hot glass with them, as the glass will stick to the gloves. Also, please remember to shut off the electricty to your kiln before reaching in.

Another very useful glove is a leather palmed glove. Remembering that gloves wear out as much due to abrasion as they do to burning, a leather palmed glove is much more resistant to abrasion. While these are not good for handling hot glass itself, they are great for handling items that are warm-to-hot, such as opening furnace doors, using ladles, etc. In addition, they have an aluminized backing to reflect heat away when you are working, say, close to the furnaces.
